Eegai (ஈகை)

1. வறியார்க்கொன் றீவதே ஈகைமற் றெல்லாங்
    குறியெதிர்ப்பை நீர துடைத்து

விளக்கம் : இல்லாதவர்க்கு வழங்குவதே ஈகைப் பண்பாகும் மற்றவர்களுக்கு வழங்குவது என்பது ஏதோ ஓர் ஆதாயத்தை எதிர்பார்த்து வழங்கப்படுவதாகும்

Couplet :

Call that a gift to needy men thou dost dispense,
All else is void of good, seeking for recompense

Explanation : To give to the destitute is true charity All other gifts have the nature of (what is done for) a measured return

Transliteration : Variyaarkkondru Eevadhe Eekaimar RellaamKuriyedhirppai Neera Thutaiththu

2. நல்லா றெனினுங் கொளல்தீது மேலுலகம்
    இல்லெனினும் ஈதலே நன்று

விளக்கம் : பிறரிடமிருந்து நல்வழியில் பொருளைப் பெற்றாலும் அது பெருமையல்ல; சிறுமையே ஆகும் கொடை வழங்குவதால் மேலுலகம் என்று சொல்லப்படுவது கிட்டிவிடப் போவதில்லை; எனினும் பிறர்க்குக் கொடுத்து வாழ்வதே சிறந்த வாழ்க்கையாகும்

Couplet :

Though men declare it heavenward path, yet to receive is ill;
Though upper heaven were not, to give is virtue still

Explanation : To beg is evil, even though it were said that it is a good path (to heaven) To give is good, even though it were said that those who do so cannot obtain heaven

Transliteration : Nallaaru Eninum Kolaldheedhu MelulakamIlleninum Eedhale Nandru

3. இலனென்னும் எவ்வம் உரையாமை ஈதல்
    குலனுடையான் கண்ணே யுள

விளக்கம் : தமக்குள்ள வறுமைத் துன்பத்தைக் காட்டிக்கொள்ளாமல் பிறருக்கு ஈவது உயர்ந்த குடிப்பிறந்தவரின் பண்பாகும்

Couplet :

'I've nought' is ne'er the high-born man's reply;
He gives to those who raise themselves that cry

Explanation : (Even in a low state) not to adopt the mean expedient of saying 'I have nothing,' but to give, is the characteristic of the mad of noble birth

Transliteration : Ilanennum Evvam Uraiyaamai EedhalKulanutaiyaan Kanne Yula

4. இன்னா திரக்கப் படுதல் இரந்தவர்
    இன்முகங் காணு மளவு

விளக்கம் : ஈதல் பண்புடையவர்க்குத் தம்மை நாடி வரும் இரவலரின் புன்னகை பூத்த முகத்தைக் கண்டு இன்புறும் வரையில், அவருக்காக இரக்கப்படுவதும் ஒரு துன்பமாகவே தோன்றும்

Couplet :

The suppliants' cry for aid yields scant delight,
Until you see his face with grateful gladness bright

Explanation : To see men begging from us in disagreeable, until we see their pleasant countenance

Transliteration : Innaadhu Irakkap Patudhal IrandhavarInmukang Kaanum Alavu

5. ஆற்றுவா ராற்றல் பசியாற்றல் அப்பசியை
    மாற்றுவா ராற்றலிற் பின்

விளக்கம் : பசியைப் பொறுத்துக் கொள்ளும் நோன்பைக் கடைப்பிடிப்பதைவிடப் பசித்திருக்கும் ஒருவருக்கு உணவு அளிப்பதே சிறந்ததாகும்

Couplet :

'Mid devotees they're great who hunger's pangs sustain,
Who hunger's pangs relieve a higher merit gain

Explanation : The power of those who perform penance is the power of enduring hunger It is inferior to the power of those who remove the hunger (of others)

6. அற்றார் அழிபசி தீர்த்தல் அஃதொருவன்
    பெற்றான் பொருள்வைப் புழி

விளக்கம் : பட்டினி எனச் சொல்லி வந்தவரின் பசியைத் தீர்ப்பது வீண் போகாது அதுவே, தான் தேடிய பொருளைப் பிற்காலத்தில் உதவுவதற்கு ஏற்பச் சேமித்து வைக்கக்கூடிய கருவூலமாகும்

Couplet :

Let man relieve the wasting hunger men endure;
For treasure gained thus finds he treasure-house secure

Explanation : The removal of the killing hunger of the poor is the place for one to lay up his wealth

Transliteration : Atraar Azhipasi Theerththal AqdhoruvanPetraan Porulvaip Puzhi

7. பாத்தூண் மரீஇ யவனைப் பசியென்னுந்
    தீப்பிணி தீண்ட லரிது

விளக்கம் : பகிர்ந்து உண்ணும் பழக்கம் உடையவர்களைப் பசியென்னும் கொடிய நோய் அணுகுவதில்லை

Couplet :

Whose soul delights with hungry men to share his meal,
The hand of hunger's sickness sore shall never feel

Explanation : The fiery disease of hunger shall never touch him who habitually distributes his food to others

Transliteration : Paaththoon Mareei Yavanaip PasiyennumTheeppini Theental Aridhu

8. ஈத்துவக்கும் இன்பம் அறியார்கொல் தாமுடைமை
    வைத்திழக்கும் வன்க ணவர்

விளக்கம் : ஏழை எளியோர்க்கு எதுவும் அளித்திடாமல் ஈ.ட்டிய பொருள் அனைத்தையும் இழந்திடும் ஈ.வு இரக்கமற்றோர், பிறர்க்கு வழங்கி மகிழ்வதில் ஏற்படும் இன்பத்தை அறியமாட்டாரோ?

Couplet :

Delight of glad'ning human hearts with gifts do they not know.
Men of unpitying eye, who hoard their wealth and lose it so

Explanation : Do the hard-eyed who lay up and lose their possessions not know the happiness which springs from the pleasure of giving ?

Transliteration : Eeththuvakkum Inpam Ariyaarkol ThaamutaimaiVaiththizhakkum Vanka Navar

9. இரத்தலின் இன்னாது மன்ற நிரப்பிய
    தாமே தமிய ருணல்

விளக்கம் : பிறர்க்கு ஈவதால் குறையக் கூடுமென்று, குவித்து வைத்துள்ளதைத் தாமே உண்ணுவது என்பது கையேந்தி இரந்து நிற்பதைக் காட்டிலும் கொடுமையானது

Couplet :

They keep their garners full, for self alone the board they spread;-
'Tis greater pain, be sure, than begging daily bread

Explanation : 29 Solitary and unshared eating for the sake of filling up one's own riches is certainly much more

10. சாதலின் இன்னாத தில்லை இனிததூஉம்
      ஈத லியையாக் கடை

விளக்கம் : சாவு எனும் துன்பத்தைவிட வறியவர்க்கு எதுவும் வழங்க இயலாத மனத்துன்பம் பெரியது

Couplet :

'Tis bitter pain to die, 'Tis worse to live.
For him who nothing finds to give

Explanation : Nothing is more unpleasant than death: yet even that is pleasant where charity cannot be exercised

Transliteration : Saadhalin Innaadha Thillai InidhadhooumEedhal Iyaiyaak Katai
